Cora put down her pitcher, dipped her feet in the laughing brook, and then bent down and stuck her head in. She came up smiling and dripping, for the day was a hot one. All of a sudden, she heard, “Ding, ding, ding, ding.” It was the dinner bell! She quickly dipped some water in the pitcher. Saying a silent prayer for the deliciously cold water, she ran, almost flying, back to her house.

When Cora got back, her sister and brother had already sat down. “Where were ya, Cora?” Carl inquired airily. He was eight years old, and had all the freedom and alacrity a small boy can. “I was down by the brook,” she replied, stuffing her mouth full of good bread and cheese. “Did you bring back any water?” Charity asked, “It’s so hot today.” She was sixteen, with a sweet personality and manners. Cora wordlessly held up the pitcher, and then carefully filled the cups on the table, spilling only a little. They all clinked glasses and then fell to drinking thirstily. “Let’s thank God for the wonderful meal.” Charity said, wiping her mouth. So they prayed together, then Carl tripped inside their small, one-room cabin to get the family Bible. As they sat listening to Charity read, they heard a noise in the bushes…
